An evening with Mr Ky Cao, Pioneering Entrepreneur in Independent Power & Renewable Energy

An evening with Mr Ky Cao, Pioneering Entrepreneur in Independent Power & Renewable Energy

On May 29, 2024, the WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce (WACCC) hosted a networking event featuring Mr Ky Cao, co-founder of Perth Energy – the first independent electricity seller in Western Australia. Mr Cao headed Perth Energy until his retirement in 2016. He subsequently developed an independent solar farm in Vietnam which was connected to the country’s main grid.

Mr Cao presented on the historical restructuring of the WA Electricity Sector during the early 2000s, which led to the creation of Western Power, Synergy, Horizon Power, and Verve Energy (later merged with Synergy). This restructuring and other reform created the opportunity for Perth Energy to enter the market, and to developed 3 privately owned electricity generators to supply corporate demand. Mr Cao also presented his thoughts of the outlook for different energy sources (coal, gas, renewables and nuclear) as they apply to our State.

The evening was well attended by members and guests. Distinguished guests included Mrs Thanh Ha Nguyen, Consul-General of Vietnam, and friends from the Western Australia Vietnam Business Council Inc.
