Unlocking ASEAN Opportunities – WACCC Business Mission

The Western Australia Chinese Chambers of Commerce (WACCC) led a Business Mission to Jakarta, Johor Bahru, and Singapore from August 14-19. The Business Mission successfully brought together WA business leaders and ASEAN stakeholders to explore new opportunities, deepen relationships, and foster cross-border collaboration.
The WACCC is delighted to highlight some of the key moments and insights from this productive and informative trade mission.
Jakarta, Indonesia – Aug 14-16

Jakarta: Gateway to Indonesia’s Growth
The mission commenced in Jakarta, where delegates engaged with local industry leaders and gained firsthand exposure to Indonesia’s dynamic market. With a population of over 270 million and a rapidly expanding middle class, Indonesia presents compelling opportunities for WA businesses in sectors such as agribusiness, education, and infrastructure.
Takeaway:
- Indonesia’s scale and growth trajectory demand long-term commitment and local partnerships. WA businesses should consider joint ventures and culturally attuned engagement strategies to build trust and market relevance.
Johor Bahru, Malaysia – Aug 17-18

Johor Bahru: Industrial Innovation and Chamber Collaboration
In Johor Bahru, delegates toured Ecoworld Business Park and Nusajaya Tech Park, gaining insights into Malaysia’s industrial development and investment readiness. A market briefing by the WA Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) provided valuable context on regional trends.
The afternoon featured a joint chambers networking event hosted by Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB), with investment briefings from the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). Delegates connected with representatives from JBCCCI, MICCI, and MABC, fostering meaningful dialogue on cross-border collaboration.
Takeaways:
- Malaysia’s industrial zones offer high-quality infrastructure and government-backed incentives, making them attractive for WA companies in manufacturing, logistics, and clean energy.
- Chamber-to-chamber engagement is a powerful platform for WA businesses to build networks, access market intelligence, and navigate local ecosystems.
Singapore – Aug 16 and 19

Singapore: Rekindling WA ties in a Strategic Hub for Regional Expansion
The delegation had a pit-stop in Singapore on Aug 16 before heading to Johor Bahru the next day. The delegation reconnected with Singaporean-based WACCC members and Chamber Patron, Mr. Simon Lee, AO, at dinner over chili crabs and Singaporean delicacies.
On Aug 19, the delegation returned and concluded its mission in Singapore with a networking lunch hosted by WA Trade Commissioner Betty Yang, followed by a market briefing with Fullerton Fund Management. These sessions highlighted Singapore’s role as a regional headquarters and financial gateway.
Takeaways:
- Singapore’s stable regulatory environment and global connectivity make it an ideal base for WA firms seeking to expand across ASEAN.
- WA businesses in professional services, technology, and finance can leverage Singapore’s ecosystem to scale operations and access capital.
A Mission of Connection and Opportunity

WACCC extends its sincere gratitude to all hosts, partners, and delegates who contributed to the mission’s success. The engagements reaffirm our commitment to building bridges between Western Australia and Asia, and to supporting WA businesses in navigating ASEAN markets with confidence and cultural intelligence.
